2. Who is the lady of the house?
OR: Who is speaking to Horace Danby?
OR: Who is the real culprit in the story?
Ans: The lady of the house/the speaker to Horace Danby/the real culprit of the story was the girl who was another one thief like Horace Danby. She came to steal the box or the fifteen thousand pounds’ worth of jewels in the Grange safe. She was young and pretty. She was dressed in red and her voice was kindly quiet. She had more talent than Horace Danby.

3. Did you begin to suspect before the end of the story that the lady was not the person Horace Danby took her to be? If so, at what point did you realise this and how?
Ans: The lady was more intelligent than Horace Danby. She acted like the lady of the house. So, nobody could realize that she was also a thief. Her expressions and speeches were also like an owner of the house.

At the end of the story, Horace Danby was arrested. When he informed the police about the lady and their conversations. Then, the reader came to realise the truth of the story. We realise that the main culprit of the story was the lady. But, no one believed that the grey haired old woman did not accept the story.

4. What are the subtle ways in which the lady manages to deceive Horace Danby into thinking she is the lady of the house?
Why doesn’t Horace suspect that something is wrong?
Ans: To deceive Horace and to believe as an owner/lady of the house, the lady planned some techniques of speeches which were used to believe for Horace.

Firstly, she was walking to the fireplace as she was the owner of the house.

Secondly, she said that anyone would think she would have been away for a month and also said that she came there at the right time.

Thirdly, she warned him (Horace) that if he ran away from there then she would telephone the police and tell them all about the matter. Also, she behaved as if she was the owner.

Fourthly, she ethically warned him that she did not allow him to go, because, if she allowed, then he would rob the others. Also, she ethically said that society must be protected from men like him.

Fifthly, she informed Horace that before they left for London, she promised her husband to take her jewels to their bank. But, she left them in the safe. So, she came to take them. Moreover (Tarupari), she informed me that she wanted to wear the jewels to a party that night.

Sixthly, she mentioned that her husband would not return for a month. So, she gave faith in not to take any tension.
Thus, the lady or the woman deceived Horace that she was the owner/lady of the house.

Horace did not suspect that something was wrong, because the lady acted so clearly that could not understand the false things. She behaved like the owner and her voice totally acted as a lady of the house. Also, her moving style, speeches, and performance are better that nobody can realise the main point. That’s why; the reader only can find the main culprit at the end of the story when Horace informed the whole matter to the police.

5. “Horace Danby was good and respectable—but not completely honest”. Why do you think this description is apt for Horace? Why can’t he be categorized as a typical thief?

Ans: Everyone thought that Horace Danby was a good and an honest citizen. He was about fifty years old and unmarried. Also, he was respected by everyone. But, He was not completely honest. Because, he was also a secret thief which no one knew about. He stole money every year to buy books and every year planned at least one. In this story, we find that he had planned to steal the Shotover Grange for the jewellery. We have also got the fact that for his work he was arrested and became the assistant of the prison library.

Horace Danby was a thief. But, he cannot be categorised as a typical thief because, Horace purposes are not as same as the typical thief. A typical thief basically aims to collect and increase the money or the property. Instead, Horace had only aimed to buy some rare and expensive books. So, these are totally different from the typical thief.

So, he faltered at that time because she behaved like an owner and a lady of the house. For this reason, he removed his gloves and then only he did the wrong thing. That’s why, his fingerprints were left on the things and he was arrested at last for his fingerprints.

He did something wrong. At first, he did not recognise the lady. Secondly, he thought of the lady as an owner or a lady of the house. Thirdly, he removed his gloves. Fourthly, he could not flee from the house. At last, he did not flee from the police and his thoughts were totally wrong.
